| Those of you who
have followed our band, Corky's Oldtime Rock & Roll Revival, know that
last summer we had the privilege of working with one of the masters.
In the mid-50's Jay Fairman and some classmates from Gary Indiana formed a vocal group (which would later be called a "Do-Wop" group). When they first started rehearsing someone said they sounded like a pack of dogs ... so they named the group The Spaniels. In 1954 the group recorded what would soon become a standard for all other Do-Wop songs to live up to ... "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight"! In 1955 the McGuire Sisters recording of this song went all the way to # 7. Sha Na Na would later use it as their closing song in concerts and on their weekly TV show. Jay T. Fairman passed away at home. He was 69. But those of us in Corky's will never forget our summer with Jay. His stories of Sam Cooke, Al Green, and Lou Rawls ... his infectious laughter ... and his smooth, velvety vocals. His stage presence commanded attention from young and old and made the audience feel like long lost friends. Though he was fighting cancer during our time together, he continually gave thanks to the Lord ... and let his heart pour out in the words of his songs. We will miss him. |
